CALIFORNIA NURSE MIDWIVES ASSOCIATION
PRESCRIBING SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES
CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM

This 2-contact hour course, presented by the California Nurse Midwives Association, in affiliation with California State University, Fullerton, and approved by the BRN as a continuing education course, will focus on principles of pharmacology related to pharmacotherapeutic management of women whose illness, injury or condition requires evaluation and treatment using Schedule II controlled substances outside of the acute care hospital. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles of Schedule II medications commonly used in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of women’s health care conditions will be included. In addition, legal requirements for furnishing controlled substances as well as principles related to patient-specific protocols for Schedule II controlled substances will be covered.

At completion of the program, the CNM will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the pharmacokinetics related Schedule 2 controlled medications used with the diagnosis of illness, injury, or conditions in women’s health.

2.  Analyze state laws and federal regulation pertaining to the furnishing, dispensing, and administering Schedule 2 Controlled Substances for out of hospital patient use.

3. Outline the required components of a furnishing standardized procedure or protocol for Schedule II controlled substance medications in a Patient-Specific Protocol in accord with Business and Profession Code, Section 2836.1.  The nurse midwife’s education, experience, and competence to furnish controlled substances must be included.

Following completion of the program the CNM will receive a certificate of completion that can be copied and submitted to the Board of Registered Nursing with their next renewal to meet the requirements of SB614.
